Edith Schaeffer's Thoughts On Prayer 1. Edith Schaeffer, With Love, Edith (San Francisco: Harper & Row, 1988), 137. Letter from Switzerland, February 28, 1950. 2. Edith Schaeffer, Dear Family (San Francisco: Harper & Row, 1989), 21. Letter from Switzerland, July 21, 1961. 3. Edith Schaeffer, The Tapestry (Waco: Word Books, 1981, 1984), 58, 126. The Schaeffers' autobiography. Introduction. 1. Edith Schaeffer, L'Abri (Wheaton: Tyndale House Publishers, 1969), 124,125. 2. See Francis A. Schaeffer, He Is There And He Is Not Silent in The Complete Works of Francis A. Schaeffer: A Christian Worldview, "A Christian View of Philosophy and Culture" (Westchester: Crossway Books, 1982), Volume One, 273-352. 3. My previous book on Dr. Francis Schaeffer was a brief biography that tried to explain or interpret his apologetics for lay people: see Francis Schaeffer: The Man and His Message (Eastbourne: Kingsway Publications, 1985). When I compiled and edited Edith Schaeffer's The Art Of Life (Wheaton: Crossway Books, 1987), I put some of Edith's basic teachings on creativity and life in a devotional book, but omitted any discussions on prayer. Most recently, Edith Schaeffer has published The Life Of Prayer (Wheaton: Crossway Books, 1992), but this book does not discuss their personal answers to prayer in light of their own prayer principles and the Scriptures. Nor does the book use a devotional format of daily readings. I hope that after your read How God Teaches Us To Pray, you will be inspired to read Edith's book The Life Of Prayer. 4. Some of Dr. Schaeffer's sermons on prayer are available on tapes from L'Abri. These are Framework for Prayer 26.3 and Prayer Series 24.2, 24.3, 26.1, 26.2. A listing of most of Dr. Schaeffer's tapes are in the American Edition of Francis Schaeffer: The Man and Is Message (Wheaton: Tyndale House Publishers, 1986), 229-241, but for reasons unknown to the author this was excluded from the British Edition. 5. Francis Schaeffer, Letters of Francis A. Schaeffer, edited with introductions by Lane T. Dennis, Westchester, Crossway Books, 1985. 6. Edith Schaeffer's family letters were published in her With Love, Edith (San Francisco: Harper and Row, 1988), 458 pages, and in her Dear Family (San Francisco: Harper and Row, 1989), 428 pages. The story of their lives is found in L'Abri and in her autobiography, The Tapestry: "The Life and Times of Francis and Edith Schaeffer" (Waco: Word, 1981, Special Memorial Edition, 1984), 654 pages. Her two books of letters and The Tapestry are now out of print. All quotations from the Schaeffers' books are from these three out of print books. References to their books still in print will be found in the Endnotes to this volume. 7. Edith Schaeffer was born in China to parents who were missionaries in the China Inland Mission. She learned many of her ideas about prayer from the godly examples of these missionaries. L'Abri inherited much from Hudson Taylor's teachings and his life of prayer. Prayer meetings were established in England and all over the world for Hudson Taylor's work, just as people from all over the world have interceded for the Schaeffer's and L'Abri as the L'Abri Praying Family. See also the books I have compiled and edited from the writings of Charles G. Finney: Charles G. Finney, Answers To Prayer (Minneapolis: Bethany House Publishers, 1983); Principles of Prayer (Minneapolis: Bethany House Publishers, 1980); Principles of Devotion (Minneapolis: Bethany House Publishers, 1987). Word (UK) Ltd. has also published my Andrew Murray and C.H. Spurgeon, The Believer's Secret of Intercession (Milton Keynes: Word Publishing, 1989) and Andrew Murray and Brother Andrew, The Believer's Secret of the Abiding Presence (Milton Keynes: Word Publishing, 1989). 8. Schaeffer: Portraits of the Man and His Work, edited by Lane T. Dennis, (Westchester: Crossway Books, 1986), 141-151. 10. It would have been impossible for me to try and capture Edith's style of writing in this book, and I have not tried. Each writer's style, just as each Christian's prayer life, will be intensely personal. I do encourage you to read Edith's books for yourself, and I hope this book will inspire you to do so. 11. He often said that True Spirituality was the most important book he ever wrote and the only one he ever reread to keep in touch with the reality of what he was doing. Francis A. Schaeffer, True Spirituality in The Complete Works of Francis A. Schaeffer: A Christian Worldview, "A Christian View of Spirituality" (Westchester: Crossway Books, 1982), Volume Three, 195-378. See also the important books, The Church Before The Watching World and The Mark Of The Christian in The Complete Works, "A Christian View of the Church", Volume Four, 113-205. 12. Dr. Schaeffer died of cancer in Rochester, Minnesota, in 1984. Mrs. Schaeffer made her home there until moving back to Switzerland. Chapter 1. If The Answer Is No 1. Edith Schaeffer, Dear Family (San Francisco: Harper & Row, 1989), 22. See also Edith Schaeffer, "If God Is Sovereign, Why Pray?" in The Life Of Prayer (Wheaton: Crossway Books, 1992). 205-221. Chapter 2. Praying For The Jews 1. Edith Schaeffer, Christianity Is Jewish (Wheaton: Tyndale House Publishers, 1975); Edith Schaeffer, Forever Music (Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1986); Franz Mohr with Edith Schaeffer, My Life With The Great Pianists (Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1992). The book by Mohr (with Edith Schaeffer) will especially encourage Christians who have secular jobs. It shows how Mohr prayed for people, sometimes for years, for God to prepare their hearts and give him the opportunity to tell them about Jesus when they would have a receptive mind. 2. You can learn how to buy Prophecy Editions of the New Testament by writing Million Testaments Campaigns, 1211 Arch Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19107, U.S.A. 3. Francis A. Schaeffer and C. Schaeffer, The God Who Is There (Downers Grove: Intervarsity Press, 1968). Before his death in 1984, Dr. Schaeffer edited and combined his works in the five volume set: The Complete Works of Francis A. Schaeffer (Wheaton: Crossway Books, 1982). The newest edition of Affliction is scheduled to be published by Baker Book House of Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1993. 4. Edith Schaeffer, L'Abri: New Expanded Edition (Wheaton: Crossway Books, 1992). First edition published in 1969. Chapter 4. God Has Provided Before We Pray 1. Edith Schaeffer, With Love, Edith (San Francisco: Harper & Row Publishers, 1988), 99. Chapter 5. Learning To Pray 1. With Love Edith, 110. 2. For her specific teachings on prayer, see The Life Of Prayer. Chapter 7. Living By Faith 1. See Dr. and Mrs. Howard Taylor, J. Hudson Taylor: God's Man in China, Chicago: Moody Press, 1965. Chapter 8. Passing On Our Faith 1. See George Müller, The Autobiography of George Müller, edited by H. Lincoln Wayland, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1981 (reprinted from the 1861 edition). 2. With Love, Edith, 237. 3. With Love, Edith, 251. 4. Daily Light is a collection of various Bible verses selected for a brief daily reading and available in many different translations, languages, and editions. Chapter 10. When God Moves Slowly 1. With Love, Edith, 273. 2. These lessons were eventually published by Francis Schaeffer as Basic Bible Studies, Wheaton: Tyndale House Publishers, 1972. Some people have become Christians in my churches as the direct result of group studies of this book. Chapter 12. The Battle In Prayer And Satan 1. With Love, Edith, 275. 2. Edith Schaeffer's book Affliction is probably the best book on the question of affliction and the spiritual battle we face as Christians. First published by Revell in 1978, a new edition is scheduled by Baker Book House in 1993. 3. These lectures were later revised and published as True Spirituality, Wheaton: Tyndale House Publishers, 1971. Fran believed that God gave these lectures to him as the foundation of all that was to follow in his life and for the beginning of L'Abri. Chapter 14. Praying Through The Promises Of God 1. To learn the exciting story of the founding of L'Abri and the many answers to prayer and the Lord's protection they received, read Edith Schaeffer, L'Abri: New Expanded Edition, Wheaton: Crossway Books, 1992. Chapter 15. My Father's House 1. With Love, Edith, 288. 2. With Love, Edith, 319. 3. In The Tapestry, Edith called this answering prayer "backwards", 421. 4. With Love, Edith, 324. Chapter 17. My Father's Provisions 1. Edith Schaeffer, The Tapestry, 420. Chapter 19. Living Before Others 1. See especially Francis A. Schaeffer, The Mark of the Christian, Downers Grove: Intervarsity Press, 1970; True Spirituality, Wheaton: Tyndale House Publishers, 1971; The Church Before The Watching World, Downers Grove: Intervarsity Press, 1971; The Great Evangelical Disaster, Wheaton: Crossway Books, 1984. 2. In many ways, accomplishing this feat daily for more than thirty years shows the wonder working power of God more than many other answers to prayer in the Schaeffers' and similar books. For a similar example from the Nineteenth Century, you can read about the answers to prayer of America's greatest revivalist in Charles G. Finney, Answers To Prayer, Minneapolis: Bethany House Publishers, 1983, compiled and edited by L. G. Parkhurst, Jr. When one studies the Schaeffers' work in depth, one discovers that their work in L'Abri was one of almost continuous revival for more than thirty years. This chapter and those that follow teach some of the secrets of maintaining a personal work of revival: the practice of Biblical Christianity in the power of the Holy Spirit. Chapter 22. Confidence In Prayer And Our Conscience 1. also, Andrew Murray and Brother Lawrence, The Believer's Secret of The Abiding Presence, compiled and edited by L. G. Parkhurst, Jr. (Milton Keynes: Word (UK) Ltd., 1989). Brother Lawrence practiced the presence of Christ much like the Schaeffers; however, the Schaeffers did so while constantly surrounded by unbelievers. Chapter 23. Prayer And Righteousness 1. See especially Dr. Schaeffer's last book, The Great Evangelical Disaster, Wheaton: Crossway Books, 1984. Chapter 25. Prayer And Hard Work 1. Edith Schaeffer, Dear Family, 103. 2. Edith Schaeffer, With Love, Edith, 438. 3. Edith Schaeffer, Dear Family, 94. Chapter 26. Prayer And Sacrifice 1. Edith Schaeffer, Dear Family, 26. Chapter 28. Asking Great Things From God 1. Francis Schaeffer, How Should We Then Live?, (Wheaton: Crossway Books, 1983): first published in 1976. Francis Schaeffer and C. Everett Koop, M.D., Whatever Happened To The Human Race?, (Old Tappan: Fleming H. Revell, 1979). Films by Gospel Films. 2. Francis Schaeffer, A Christian Manifesto, (Wheaton: Crossway Books, 1981) and The Great Evangelical Disaster, (Wheaton: Crossway Books, 1984). 3. Eventually, Francis Schaeffer's picture would be featured prominently on the book covers of Great Leaders of the Christian Church, edited by John D. Woodbridge, (Chicago: Moody Press, 1988); Christopher Catherwood, Five Evangelical Leaders, (Wheaton: Harold Shaw Publishers, 1985), and L. G. Parkhurst, Jr. Francis Schaeffer: The Man and His Message, (Eastbourne: Kingsway Publications, 1986). 4. They named Farel House after a Swiss Reformer who preceded Calvin, because he was one of the warmest and most understanding of the Reformers. His spirit and temper was one that those in L'Abri wanted to model. Many of Fran's taped lectures were first made for Farel House students. Chapter 31. Life After Death 1. See especially, Edith Schaeffer, Forever Music, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1992, and Edith Schaeffer, The Art of Life, compiled and edited by L. G. Parkhurst, Jr., Eastbourne: Kingsway Publications, 1988. 2. For a good description of this type of prayer life and how to practice it, see Andrew Murray and Brother Lawrence, The Believer's Secret of The Abiding Presence, compiled and edited by L. G.
